2001 Worlds Mens Free

The men's competition started during nap time, so we missed the first two flights of men this afternoon. The people behind us brought Marshall a toy dog and our friends the Jensens brought him a whole bunch of toys to keep him amused during the skating. He has been more trouble here than at Nationals. At Nationals we were in row 1 and he could keep his eyes on the skating, and really liked it. But unfortunately we are now in row 17 and so the skating is mostly just a blur to him, poor baby.

Oh yeah you want to know about skating. Okay here we go the final two flights.

Australia - Anthony Liu
Fell on his opening quad. Popped his axel, fell on something else landed triple lutz/double toe. He doubled something else, then landed triple loop and sal and another triple. He has a beautiful camel spin. 14th
Canada - Elvis Stojko
Started with an excellent triple flip, and it was all downhill from there. Fell on his quad, did another quad and stepped out of it. Did a triple loop, double axel, I think a triple axel. Then stepped out of a triple salchow and put his hand down on the triple lutz. But Canadians are the nicest fans in the world and gave him a standing O and sang happy birthday to him. 10th place
Japan - Takeshi Honda
There was some debris left on the ice after the presents thrown to Elvis that the flower scooters missed. So Takeshi had to do his own ice sweeping. Started with a triple axle and fell out of it, then stepped out of the quad. Doubled something, then did a triple loop, triple axel/double toe and good footwork into a triple. Ended with an outside spread into an inside spread into a combination spin. He has great feeling and interpretation of the music. That helped overcome his jumps and he was 5th.
China - Chengjiang Li
Landed a quad toe/triple toe, then a double salchow I think my notes say. Popped an axel, landed a triple axel then fell on the triple toe part of the combo. Landed another triple axel, triple loop, and triple salchow. 7th
Bulgaria - Ivan Dinev
Started out popping something, then landed a triple axel/triple toe that he almost had to put his hand down on. Landed a triple lutz, triple axel, triple loop, triple sal and two other triples. He did a pretty serpentine footwork sequence. 12th
France - Stanick Jeanette
I am not a fan of the avant garde French style. And this was particularly weird. I stopped even trying to take notes. I can't believe this country gave the world Eric Millot. (or as skating Kitty likes to call him, Eric Meow) 11th
Russia - Alexi Yagudin
Did a quad toe/triple toe that almost kissed the boards. Then he did a triple axel, with a turn out/triple toe with a hand down. Fell or stepped out of some triple I can't read my notes very well on. Landed a triple axel, triple loop and triple sal. He motioned to the audience to start clapping before throwing himself into his diagonal footwork. The crowd loved it when he slid on his arm on the ice. Silver Medal
Russia - Evengi Plushenko
I have been saying for months he would win this puppy. No brilliance on my part, he has been a jumping machine this season. He landed everything and the kitchen sink. Played with the audience and didn't even bother with that second quad. He landed his famous quad toe/triple toe/double loop series, which is stunning to see in person. Then he landed triple axel, triple axel/triple toe, triple sal, triple lutz, triple loop, triple flip, and a double axel, I guess just for fun. He did a Bielman spiral and ended with a combo spin including a Bielman. Gold Medal
USA - Todd Eldredge
It was great, a few years ago this would have won. He landed triple toe, triple loop, triple flip, triple axel/triple toe, triple lutz, triple axel and triple sal. He did two split jumps towards the end of the program and has the most impeccable line. You could use this boy's spiral for a ruler. He did a fabulous combination spin that was unbelievably fast. The crowd was on it's feet at least 8 seconds before the end of the program. He won the Bronze medal, take that all you bums who said he was over the hill and we shouldn't have sent him.
China - Yunfei Li
He doesn't have the presentation of the other China Li, but boy there is a lot there to build on. He landed a quad toe, hand down/triple toe, then popped an axel. Landed a triple/triple, another unidentified triple, triple lutz/double toe, double axel and a triple sal. He did a spread eagle, but looked down at the ice instead of up at the audience too much. Of course I once had the same complaint about Ilia Kulik, and you see where that got me. 6th
USA - Timmy Goebel
Landed triple lutz, quad sal/triple toe, fell out of a triple axel/double toe, fell out of the quad toe, triple axel, quad sal, triple flip, and triple loop. He had a very good diagonal footwork sequence. He got fourth. And the USA gets three men at next year's Olympics. I hope Weiss sends Timmy and Todd thank you notes.
