Day 7

2004 Nationals Sr. Lady's Free

For many many reasons I took very few notes of the Senior Lady's. Here is what I do have. At some point between the Men's and Lady's Free Skate these words filled my head and have been running through it ever since "But I am done with Apple Picking now."

If you don't know Robert Frost's After Apple Picking go read it here:

http://stellar-one.com/poems/after_apple_picking_robert_frost.htm

I'm thinking Frost must have been a figure skating fan, cause this poem so perfectly describes what a week at Nationals is like: "I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired." Yes I wanted this, yes I love this, but Lordy now I am so tired!!! That's Nationals in a nutshell. And I am done with apple picking now.

Suzy McDonald
She landed a double axel and a triple lutz/double toe. She fell on something and landed a double loop. She did a very pretty layback spin and a split jump. She had a stumble in her footwork. All her spin positions are pretty. She ended with a blur scratch spin.
Erica Archambault
Landed a triple salchow, step, step double toe. Good height on the salchow. Singled an axel, landed a double loop. Held her spiral very well. Popped a lutz. She has a nice flowing spread eagle. Popped something else. Fell on something. Did a beautiful Ina Baur across the length of the rink.
Natalie Mecher
Two footed a triple lutz. Landed a triple/double combination. Stepped out of a salchow. She landed another triple jump with her knee bent very much, but still stood up. She is fast. She landed a triple salchow and a double axel, two footed a loop and landed a double axel/double toe. She has great, fast, difficult footwork.
Felicia Beck
Started out with a great catchfoot layback spin. Unfortunately she had a lot of jump problems. But still never let up in a very dramatic program, despite her jump problems her performance level was one of the best in the competition. She did a Beilman spiral for half the rink and ended with a very extended Bielman spin. After the event she was part of the Chevy Scholastic Honors team. While waiting to go on and get her trophy a bunch of little girls called for her to give them autographs. She gladly complied, signing for them with a great big grin on her face. Very sweet girl.
Aanya Reiten
Landed a double axel/double toe and another double axel. Landed a triple jump, double lutz and a triple jump. She has a very fast pretty layback spin. Popped something. Held her spiral very nicely. Also did a Charlotte. Did a double salchow and a loop, I couldn't count. She is a very smooth, gentle skater just seems to lightly flow over the ice.
Andrea Gardiner
Did a triple lutz, turn, turn double toe. She landed a double jump, triple/double combination and a triple loop. She put her hand down and two footed something, but I didn't write down what. She did a very high double axel. And fell on a triple jump. She has a nice Ina Baur with great stretch and did a nice series of butterflies.
Danielle Kahle
Landed a double axel, stepped out of another double jump. Landed a triple salchow/triple loop combination. Landed another triple jump. She tripped on something. She landed a triple loop and then fell on a triple jump. She has good height on her flying sit spin. Landed a triple/double combination and ended with a blur scratch. She landed jumps like gangbusters in practice so I think it was just the nerves of her first Sr. Nationals that got to her. Needs ballet lessons.
Stephanie Rosenthal
I didn't take any notes for just wanting to enjoy her skating. She had a GREAT SKATE! Besides her trademark intricate spins and great footwork she landed a lot of triple jumps. She had a ton of great content in her skate and a big grin on her face throughout. She really has fabulous presentation and really reaches out to the audience.
Michelle Kwan
Do I have to even say I was jumping up and down with glee after Michelle skated? I wish I could describe how it feels to be there, to have her reach into the audience and pull you along with her. It is so exciting and the excitement just builds and builds with each completed jump. She has a way of connecting with the audience that is just pure magic. It was a privilege to be there, to be a part of the excitement and joy of her 8th! National Title.
